The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified that, through the Consulate General of Romania in Edinburgh, it self-reported as a result of the information appearing in the media, according to which a person of Romanian citizenship attempted to enter a military base in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland without authorization and took steps with the authorities in the United Kingdom to obtain official information regarding the possible arrest of the person of said citizenship.
At the same time, specific steps were also taken by the Romanian Embassy in London, through the office of the attaché for internal affairs, adds the cited source.
“Following the steps taken by the Consulate General of Romania in Edinburgh with the authorities in Scotland, they confirmed that one of the two persons detained for violating the provisions of the National Security Law of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (art. 4 (1) A – which prohibits the entry or inspection of a strategic location, when pursuing a purpose that harms the security or interests of the United Kingdom) holds Romanian citizenship”states the MAE, News writes.
According to the same source, the Consulate General of Romania in Edinburgh is prepared to provide consular assistance, within the limits of its powers.
“Given the lack of the express consent of the Romanian citizen, the MAE cannot provide, at this moment, additional information regarding the identity of the person concerned. Romanian citizens facing a difficult, special, emergency situation, have at their disposal the emergency telephone number of the Consulate General of Romania in Edinburgh: +44 (0) 7951 858 445”say the representatives of the MAE.
We recall that a 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old Romanian woman were stopped on Thursday while approaching in a vehicle an access point of HM Naval Base Clyde, the headquarters of the British Royal Navy in Scotland, where the United Kingdom's nuclear submarine fleet is stationed. The two were denied access after they could not present the necessary authorizations.
Security personnel became suspicious after they allegedly continued to behave unusually near the area. They were later apprehended and arrested by Police Scotland.
The suspects have been charged and are due to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, March 23.
HM Naval Base Clyde, known as Faslane, is one of the UK's most sensitive military installations. Located approximately 40 km north-west of Glasgow, it is home to the Trident-missile-equipped Vanguard submarines as well as the nuclear-powered Astute-class attack submarines.
The base is heavily secured by Ministry of Defense Police and Royal Marines units specializing in the protection of nuclear facilities.
