Arild Hermstad emphasized that he nominated Maia Sandu for the Nobel Peace Prize because the leader from Chisinau was in the front line of the defense of democracy in Europe.
“Maia Sandu and Moldova are fighting for us”
“Moldova has been subjected to documented attempts of Russian electoral influence, disinformation, cyber attacks and destabilization in order to obtain a government more friendly to the Kremlin, which is how Russia operates against several former Soviet states. The Russians are leading hybrid warfare against several countries, and despite great uncertainty around us, there is no doubt that Putin is the biggest threat to peace and stability in Europe. Maia Sandu and Moldova are fighting for all of us. Sandu responded to the Russians with peaceful means: to strengthen the rule of law, protect free elections and follow a democratic course. Sandu clearly distances himself from Russian imperialism and ties Moldova closer to Western democracies. This is peace work for our times: We build robust communities before conflicts turn violent. Resist authoritarian influence with transparency and public governance. Democracy is a prerequisite for true peace.” he mentioned in the post made public on his Facebook page.
According to the Norwegian MP, Maia Sandu was crucial in stopping Russia's attempts to undermine Moldovan democracy, which is why he believes she deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. The leader from Chisinau has not yet come up with a point of view regarding this proposal.
Arild Hermstad, 59, is a Norwegian politician, leader of the Green Party of Norway.
