The Minister of Finance, “very reserved in acting on the excise duty” from the fuel price. “There are several proposals”

The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, said on Monday that the Government has the objective of “stabilizing fuel prices”, but that a possible reduction in the excise duty “does not guarantee a decrease in the price”.

Asked by journalists on Monday about a possible reduction in the excise duty for the drop in fuel prices, the official said that “There are several proposals regarding how Romania should react”.

“There are analyses, these analyzes were also done by us, from the Ministry of Finance. I am convinced that in the shortest time these analyzes will be discussed at the level of the Government and a decision will be made. When the Government makes a decision, I will inform you. What I can tell you is that I am very reserved and we are generally reserved in acting on the excise tax”, continued Alexandru Nazare, quoted by Agerpres.

“Does not guarantee price drop”

He said that “a decrease in excise duty does not guarantee a decrease in price”.

“The proposals that came out in the public space are not proposals that we can… or the 40% decrease in excise duty cannot be supported from a budgetary point of view now. I think that we must be realistic and dose the measures in such a way that the objective that we have set for ourselves, that of price stabilization, is met”, added the Minister of Finance.

Alexandru Nazare believes that currently “it is essential to control the economic operators who have fuel stocks bought before, which are not influenced by the current fuel price”.

Also on Monday, Ionuț Dumitru, honorary adviser to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, said on Antena 3 that the state “doesn't have the money” to intervene “to reduce the price of fuel for everyone”, given that it still has a budget deficit “at a very high level, among the largest in Europe”.
