A gang of fraudsters scammed millions out of insurance using AI for fictitious accidents

Officers of the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime dismantled a criminal group that extorted over PLN 2.6 million through serial insurance fraud. Four people have been temporarily arrested, said CBZC spokesman Marcin Zagórski on Monday.

Warsaw police detained nine people who had been extorting compensation for almost a year. Four of them worked in insurance companies. The criminal group also included IT specialists.

According to the CBZC spokesman, the detained criminals used the specificity of automatic claims settlement systems. Using false personal and address details and altered photos of damaged vehicles, they reported fictitious damage to insurance companies, pretending to be victims of a collision.

Compensation payments concerned insurance contracts concluded online with false data.

– Coordinated actions, including reporting of individual cases, as well as efficient damage processing, enabled automatic acceptance and, consequently, transfer of funds – explained Zagórski.

Members of the group were charged with fraud and computer fraud. The maximum penalty for fraud is eight years in prison, and for computer fraud – five years. All suspects confessed to the crimes they were accused of.

During their activities, the officers secured property worth over one million zlotys. The case is ongoing and investigators continue to analyze secured data media. (PAP)
