The dramatic moment a medieval tower of Escalona Castle collapsed in front of tourists: five cars parked nearby were badly damaged

A medieval tower collapsed on Saturday at Escalona Castle in Toledo, Spain. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but there is significant damage.
Visitors waiting to enter Castillo de Escalona witnessed a tower collapse around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14. Clouds of dust rose as the stones fell, but quick warnings from bystanders sent the visitors fleeing.
Tourists caught the moment of the collapse and cries of alarm were heard just before the structure gave way completely. Five cars parked nearby were badly damaged by falling debris, according to euroweeklynews.
Authorities quickly cordoned off the area and canceled all scheduled visits for the weekend and the following weeks.
Experts from the General Directorate of Heritage of Castilla-La Mancha will arrive on Sunday 25 March to assess not only the collapsed tower, but also to carry out a full audit of the remaining walls and fortifications to prevent further risks.

A monument with over 1,000 years of history
Escalona Castle, with a history of over a millennium, was opened to the public for the first time in April 2025, after the local council acquired it in October 2024.
This acquisition transformed the previously private ruin into a popular cultural destination, attracting hundreds of visitors eager to explore the defense towers, palace remains and panoramic views of the Alberche River.
Planned restoration work on several towers, including the affected one, was already underway.
The exact causes of the crash are under investigation.
