Anthropological Film Laboratory launches a course on the indigenous peoples of Russia

13 March 12:10

The Laboratory of Documentary Anthropological Film, created at the FANK Festival of Contemporary Scientific Film, is launching an open educational program. The course of nine lectures and master classes will combine ethnography and documentary film practice.

The laboratory started in early 2026 and has already received more than 120 applications from directors and representatives of indigenous peoples from all over Russia. From among the applicants, 20 participants will be selected who will present the concepts of their films at the pitching. An expert jury will determine the five best projects – their authors will go on expeditions to the heroes of future films.

The educational program is built around a central question: how to make films about people in a way that carefully reveals their world without disturbing it? Lectures are devoted to the traditions of the peoples of Siberia, the Caucasus and the Arctic, ethics in documentary films, building a confidential dialogue with the hero and the search for a visual language.

Among the speakers are the head of the Department of Ethnology at Moscow State University Dmitry Funk, directors Anastasia Zverkova and Yulia Byvsheva, cameraman Marina Levashova, vice-president of the Non-Fiction Film Guild Evgeny Grigoriev, as well as researchers and public figures working with indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East.

The program covers the entire cycle of creating an anthropological film: from the historical and ethnographic context – through pre-production, working with the hero and organizing the expedition – to cinematography and the visual language of documentary anthropology.

The course will take place online from March 10 to April 9. Participation is free. Registration for individual lectures is available on the Laboratory website.

The project is being implemented with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
