Scientists from Siberia and their colleagues discovered a natural antibiotic in Sagaan-dal

March 12 16:00

Biologists from Tomsk State University, together with colleagues from St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Vladivostok, have compiled a detailed chemical profile of the sagaan-dali plant, which grows only in Siberia and the Far East. RIA Tomsk reports this with reference to the press service of the university.

Sagaan-dali (Rhododendron adamsii) is especially common around Lake Baikal. Local residents have long used it for medicinal teas and infusions, and today the plant is sold as an alternative to regular tea under the name “Sagan Daylya”.

Researchers have isolated more than 50 compounds in the leaves and stems – flavonols, coumarins, phenolic acids. Among them, perhaps for the first time discovered meroterpenoid daurichromenic acidwhich has the properties of a natural antibiotic. The presence of quercetin, which has an anti-inflammatory effect, and kaempferol, which can regulate tumor growth, were also confirmed.

As explained by the acting Kirill Golokhvast, director of VISH “Agrobiotek” of TSU, scientists have created a kind of “passport” of biologically active substances of the plant. Now we know exactly which compounds and in what quantities can be obtained during extraction. This will make it possible to use the sagaan-dali plant as a raw material for medicines and dietary supplements with anti-inflammatory and tonic effects.

The next stage is studying the effects of extracts on humans and developing new therapeutic approaches.
