In response to the US-Israeli attacks that began on February 28, last Monday the Iranian army announced that it was taking control of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to set fire to any vessel attempting to pass through this route.
As Reuters reported on Sunday, maritime transport is paralyzed in the Strait of Hormuz, and shipowners have officially suspended reservations for this direction. The agency refers to satellite photos which show that by Sunday morning, a total of approximately 150 vessels were stuck outside the danger zone and inside the Persian Gulf, including seven tankers heading to South Korea.
The insurance and brokerage platform Lloyd's of London has recognized the Strait of Hormuz area as a “total exclusion” zone, which in practice means that any subsequent attempt to cross without a military escort involves the immediate loss of insurance coverage. As of Sunday afternoon, maritime traffic operated by commercial shipowners was completely suspended in this area.
