Taras Bessonny
Saint Tarasius, whose memory is celebrated on this day, was the Patriarch of Constantinople in the late 8th and early 9th centuries. According to legend, he was distinguished by exceptional kindness: he was the father of the poor and orphans, the comforter of the mourning, the defender of the offended, the organizer of almshouses and hospitals.
In Rus' it was believed that the saint helped fight fever. However, the disease was ready to fight and came to the houses of Taras. The fever was represented as a demonic creature. According to the peasants, only the juice of aspen bark, scraped from the tree from the bottom up, helped.
They said that on this day one must certainly pray to Tarasius, otherwise the fever will drive the person to sleep and then enter his body. Therefore, on this day we did not sleep until sunset. Children were frightened with the following sayings: “The spring slumber has shaggy curls, waves its arms, has a glazed eye, turns to the ceiling.”
Also, in no case was it possible to look from the street into the house through the window, otherwise the fever could be caught at that very moment.
There were other bad omens for this day. It was believed, for example, that if a hut door fell off its hinges, it foreshadowed a great misfortune – the death of one of the household members, a fire or pestilence.
