“Serious accident”, CFR announces: A minor was electrocuted after boarding the train

A minor boarded one of the carriages of a broken-down freight train, on Sunday, in Halta de Mișcare Chiajna, and was electrocuted, informs the National Railway Company “CFR” SA through a press release.

The respective train belongs to CFR Marfă, and the incident occurred around 5 p.m.

“A minor got on one of the train carriages and came into contact with the electrified installations of the railway infrastructure, being electrocuted. In the electrified areas of the railway, the contact line operates at a voltage of approximately 27,000 volts, and approaching or touching it can cause extremely serious accidents,” the CFR press release states.

After reporting the incident, according to CFR, specialist teams from the company, crews of emergency services and competent bodies went to the scene to investigate the circumstances in which the event occurred.

“The National Railway Company “CFR” SA is collaborating with the competent authorities to clarify all the circumstances of the incident”, the statement also states.

“Proximity to electrified installations involves major risks”

The CFR warned that the railway infrastructure is “a technical space with restricted access”, and “climbing on the rolling stock or approaching the electrified installations involves major risks for the safety of people”.

“In the case of electrified installations, it is not necessary to touch the contact wire directly to cause an accident. The high voltage can generate an electric arc, a phenomenon through which the electric current can be transmitted to a person at a distance of approximately 1.5 meters from the conductor. In these situations, the human body becomes a conductor, and the consequences can be fatal or cause severe burns and permanent disabilities,” says CFR.

The company also mentioned that it carries out “constant awareness campaigns” regarding the dangers posed by illegal access to the railway infrastructure, as well as regarding the “risks generated by extreme behaviors in the railway area, in particular climbing on the wagons or approaching the electrified contact line”.
