Folk calendar
Midsummer's Day
Midsummer's Day is, according to the church calendar, the day of the discovery of the head of John the Baptist.
In Rus' they prayed to John the Baptist for relief from headaches. They also asked him about the health of children, the protection of crops, and fertility.
The Feast of the Finding of the Head of John was considered the day when birds found nests – that is, they began to build them. The peasants helped them in this: they corrected old birdhouses in the gardens and built new ones.
Women did not wash clothes that day so that the birds would not get scared and fly back. By the way, we have noticed: if birds build nests on the sunny side, the summer will be cold. Long-term observations have shown that the timely arrival of birds promises a good harvest.
If suddenly a tit starts singing on Midsummer's Day, it means warmth; however, if she sings drawn out and plaintively, it means she is hungry. In this case, they tried to help the birdie by setting up feeders. Seeing a lark or a stork on this day was considered a good omen.
We also looked at the weather. “If it’s a snowy day,” people said, “then it’s snowy in April, and if it’s bare, then it’s snowy in April.” The snow on Obretenie also indicated that Easter would be cold.
