Trump demanded the adoption of the SAVE AMERICA Act in a morning post on his Truth Social social networking site.

This must be done immediately. This is more important than anything else. THIS MUST BE FIRST. “I, as president, will not sign any other bills until this one is passed,” Trump wrote. “AND THIS IS NOT A WATERED VERSION – GO FOR THE GOLD: YOU MUST SHOW PROOF OF VOTER ID AND PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: NO CORRESPONDENCE VOTES EXCEPT FOR MILITARY VOTES – ILLNESS, DISABILITY, TRAVEL: NO MEN IN WOMEN'S SPORTS: NO HURTING OF TRANSGENDER CHILDREN – he continued.

This is the president's next call to adopt the project, but this is the first time Trump has given Congress an ultimatum. Although the initiative to change the electoral law enjoys the support of the ruling Republicans, due to the required 60-vote threshold in the Senate, its adoption also requires the votes of some Democrats. Trump has long pressed Republicans to eliminate the threshold, but the party has so far resisted, fearing it would give more power to Democrats when they come to power.

Democrats say the reforms would make it harder for millions of Americans who don't have passports or birth certificates to vote. Many also do not have a driving license, the main document used to confirm identity. Unlike most European countries, the US does not have nationwide ID cards.

If Trump follows through on his threat, it would potentially mean an extension of the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) budget paralysis that has been going on for three weeks. So far, the parties have failed to agree on reforms to limit abuses of the immigration services. As a result, people working without pay include: airport security briefing workers and other federal officials.
