Ciprian Ciucu explained why tram route 5 is being changed. “It's a very popular line”

The General Mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, participated on Sunday in the inauguration of tram line 5, which ensures the connection between the east and the north of Bucharest.

“Today we are opening tram line 5, on a modified route, it is right, because we are already working on the normal route of line 5. We are talking about about 5 kilometers of tram, it will go from Ștefan cel Mare, to Pod Băneasa. It is a very requested line, I am glad that we can finally put it into use”, said Ciucu, quoted by Agerpres.

The mayor specified that the rehabilitation works of the line took longer than originally planned and emphasized the importance of modernizing the tram infrastructure in the Capital. According to him, work is currently being done on the modernization of the carriageway on the Ștefan cel Mare – Sfântu Gheorghe section.

“We are talking about 50 km of tram tracks that have not been rehabilitated since the 70s. Why is this important? Because, due to the very bad condition of the tram lines today, the new trams that we have purchased and that we would purchase again break down and as soon as the warranty period ends, the repair costs are very high”, said Ciucu.

Tram 5 runs again starting today after two years on the Băneasa Airport – Pantelimon terminal route, ensuring the connection between the north and east of the Capital.

The line is frequently used by people who work in the office area in the north of the city, which is why it is also known as the “corporatists' tram”.

The authorities continue the works to modernize the carriageway on the Ștefan cel Mare – Sfântu Gheorghe section, a project that aims to improve the infrastructure and public transport conditions in the area.
