An art collection seized by Security returns to the fore at the Artmark Spring Auction

The Spring Auction, the most important event of the season on the art market, brings to Artmark not only masterpieces, but also one of the most spectacular stories of cultural recovery in Romania: a selection of impressive European art, from the Collection of Dr. Ioan Dumitrescu-Popovici, doctor and university professor, whose destiny was broken by the communist regime. In 1964, the Securitate confiscated 374 paintings, his house and his wealth; the works remained in the custody of the National Art Museum of Romania for 40 years, returning to the heirs only in 2004. Today, this collection – one of the most coveted and contested in our history – returns to the public as news that transcends the art world: paintings that survived the dictatorship are returning to the lively circuit of the market and public gaze.

Due to this selection, the current event at Artmark represents a real artistic dialogue, because works signed by Louis Willaume, Max Liebermann, Michele Federico or Kádár Géza they are found alongside treasure pieces of the Flemish, Dutch, German and Italian schools.

On the same occasion, art auctions and other masterpieces of Romanian heritage enter the circuit, also present in a new exhibition with free access, at Cesianu-Racovița Palaceheadquarters Artmark Galleries (from str. CA Rosetti no. 5, Bucharest). It is about a real royal of plastic jewels, headed by a rare portrait of “Tătărncută din Rucăr” also called “Suzana” signed by Nicolae Grigorescu and dated 1895, which enters the auction from 30,000 Euros.

The selection of masterpieces for the Spring Auction also includes an impressive signed painting Theodore Aman, “Strawberry Still Life” (1880-1885) — with a starting price of 70,000 Euros, as well as works by other artists from the top of the great masters — Ioan Andreescu, Nicholas Tonitza, Stefan Luchian, Theodore Pallady, Ion Tuculescu, Nicholas Vermont, Gheorghe Petrascu being just a few examples. He can participate in the auction scheduled for March 24 (6 p.m.), both at the Palace and on Artmark Live platformanyone who has a collector account, an account that can be obtained for free, on the artmark.ro website, here.
