A Krasnoyarsk ophthalmologist told how “digital myopia” develops due to gadgets

Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology of Krasnoyarsk State Medical University Yulia Levchenko, on the Day of Turned Off Gadgets, which is celebrated on March 5, told how digital devices affect vision.
According to the specialist, age-related vision problems are being replaced by “digital myopia” and computer vision syndrome (CVS). With prolonged use of smartphones and computers, eye fatigue, dryness develops, vision decreases, headaches appear and performance decreases. Every hour of screen time increases the risk of developing myopia by 21%.
“When we look at a screen, the eye muscles are in a constant state of tension. The ciliary muscle, which is responsible for focusing, does not relax for hours. Add to this the blue glow of the screen, flickering of the image and an unnatural pose – and you get a “time bomb” for vision,” noted Yulia Levchenko.
The ophthalmologist recommends following simple but effective rules of visual hygiene:
- for children of primary school age, screen time should not exceed 1.5 hours per day;
- every 20 minutes of working at the computer, you need to take a break and look into the distance to relax the accommodative apparatus;
- the optimal distance to the monitor is 50–70 cm, to the smartphone – at least 30 cm; — using gadgets in the dark is unacceptable. Ethis can lead to increased intraocular pressure;
- straight back and screen position at eye level or slightly lower;
- The brightness level should match the lighting in the room so that your eyes do not strain. A screen that is too bright or dim causes discomfort and fatigue;
- don’t forget about gymnastics, a simple exercise “mark on the window” is accessible and effective.
“It is impossible to completely give up gadgets, and one day will certainly not solve all vision problems. However, 24 hours without screens can relieve tension in the intraocular muscles, give rest to the accommodative apparatus and become a good prevention of visual fatigue,” the specialist emphasized.
Ophthalmologists advise undergoing a preventive eye examination at least once a year. Early detection of problems allows timely treatment to begin and maintain eye health for many years.
