After missing the first goal of the season, qualifying for the Superliga play-off, Ianis Zicu (42 years old) risks being fired from Farul during the break due to the Romanian national team matches.
The coach was warned by the president of the club, Gică Popescu, that measures will be taken if the blue-and-whites end the regular season on their knees.
Ianis Zicu, threatened with dismissal
With two negative results, in the last stage of the regular season, in Friday's away game from Miercurea Ciuc, and the first in the play-out, the Constantinians enter the race to avoid relegation.
“Obviously, if the team is not going and there are bad results in the next two games, anything can be discussed. I don't know if my fate on the technical bench depends on this or not, but in football you generally talk after every game. When things are not as they should be, to change something within the team, they go to the coach.
This happens not only at the Lighthouse, but everywhere. I saw that a coach in Brazil was changed after 8-0. There were sacked coaches who brought in their players, there were others who brought in their players and the same happened. When you are at work you assume.
I had and still have confidence in the team, we did good results, but we had some inconsistency and if we all estimated it better, we would have scored more points. A coach must have this thought in his brain all the time, because he cannot control what those above him think”, explained Ianis Zicu.

Ianis Zicu: “The fault is common”
However, coach Farul believes that the fault of missing the qualification in the play-off, for the second consecutive edition, does not belong to him, but is shared.
“It's two less good seasons and the causes differ from season to season. Every man who was in the lot at the time has a share of the blame. I mean the lot, the staff, the management, they are all together, I don't think there is a main culprit. It means that everyone has not done so well that things are better. Throwing the gauntlet from one to the other is simple”, replied Ianis Zicu.
Ianis Zicu is still thinking about Europe
Even so, the coach from Constanta is convinced that Farul has a chance not only to catch the barrier for the Conference League, but also to win it. Moreover, the optimism of the blue-and-whites is also given by the fact that only they and the former champion have submitted the documentation for the moment to obtain the necessary license to play in Europe, being only obliged to finish in the top four positions in the play-out.
“We have to believe in this goal, which can still be achieved, to play the play-off match for the European cups. When it's one leg, the chances are higher because all kinds of situations can happen, like a red card. So, the chances are even, even if FCSB will be involved. But we have to look at the playing side as well, because it's a very dangerous area. We have to secure the part of being saved mathematically as soon as possible”, said the Farul coach.
Very good conditions, much lower budget
In addition, Ianis Zicu also commented on the more difficult situation that the Constantinians are going through from a financial point of view, after they once again missed the presence in the play-off, stating that Gică Hagi provides the best conditions for the team, but does not have the necessary sums to ensure a top budget.
“I felt that, due to the conditions that this club offers, it is among the biggest in Romania. I put myself in the shoes of the player who was at Dinamo, Rapid, Poli Timișoara or Parma, and I tell you that I did not have the conditions here. That the budget is not at the level of the big clubs in Romania, yes, but it is difficult, because the owner of this team has no other business besides football. If he had produced at the level of the owners of FCSB and Rapid, I am convinced that he would not have put in the money that they put in, but more, as much as he loves football. But this is the power of our patron”, he opined.
Important absences for Friday's game
Farul will not be able to count on two basic players in the next period, Denis Alibec, who suffered a muscle microrupture, and Ionuț Vînă, who was also absent from the game with CFR Cluj due to an injury.
“Denis is not fit, but I hope he will be back in two weeks, Vîna still has problems and Furtado just started training. And I still have two players from the starting formula who are uncertain and probably won't play,” said the white-blue coach.
