Former President Traian Basescu said public statements about the effects of strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran's military capabilities during last summer's 12-Day War, including those made by US leader Donald Trump, are now proving to be “cheap propaganda that misinformed, and at the moment we have an Iran that is capable of spreading war throughout the region.”
Asked on Monday on B1 TV about the degree of danger that Iran can represent for Europe, the former Romanian head of state said that he does not believe that Tehran's forces “have the resources to strike beyond the Incirlik base (in Turkey, no) and the Akrotiri base in Cyprus”.
He recalled that at Incirlik “there are American nuclear warheads” and believes that “it is not insignificant that Iran hit this base.”
Traian Băsescu also said that he does not think that Romania is in danger, but explained that the Deveselu shield, part of a complex with elements in Poland, Portugal and Turkey, “is not intended for these missiles that are now haunting the Gulf countries and even Cyprus”.
“This whole system is intended to hit ballistic missiles that are intended to hit Europe or even intercontinental missiles that the system destroys in the stratosphere. For the missiles that Iran launches, we have the Patriot systems and the French systems, which have already been placed in the Midia area, on the Romanian coast. It is not the Deveselu shield that will protect us from Iranian missiles, but the Patriot system that we have, the three Patriot batteries, plus the French system on the coast”, explained the former president.

What he said about Trump's statements and the US secret services
Traian Băsescu criticized President Donald Trump for statements made in the past about the effects of American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in the summer of 2025.
“This conflict has expanded beyond some limits that even the Americans, and Israel, anticipated. It was a surprise the tactical approach that Iran had – and the surprise only confirms that Iran is much stronger than we think. We all thought that after the 12-day war, last year, Iran had used up most of its resources. We also knew from President Trump that, with the super-bomb, he also destroyed the facilities Well, it turns out that it was all cheap propaganda that misinformed, and now we have an Iran that is capable of spreading war throughout the region,” he added.
At the same time, the former president said that the American intelligence services “should have known what is the strategy of Iran in case it is attacked”, rather than knowing the movements of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“It seems that the United States is directing the modern war towards killing the leaders. I don't think it's a solution. They knew for nothing that Khamenei was going to the bathroom if they didn't know that Iran is ready to attack the American bases in seven countries (…). It's much more important to know the tactical and strategic intentions of Iran before attacking it. That's how we find them out afterwards and we widen our eyes,” continued Traian Băsescu.
Băsescu believes that “now it is clear that the Europeans must also enter the game in one way or another”.
“It is good that someone has decided to put an end to Iran's nuclear program. An Iran that would possess nuclear weapons would be a great danger for all countries in the region and even for Europe,” the former head of state also declared.
