NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told the BBC on Monday that Europe stands “absolutely in solidarity” with the United States' actions in Iran.

Rutte stressed that Iran was “a threat” to Europe, Israel and the region around it, and added that Europe was “intensifying its efforts” after this weekend's operations in Iran.

Asked if British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's decision to allow the US to use bases in the UK for “defensive” strikes on Iran came too late, Rutte said as far as he knew, “legal aspects” had to be looked at before the authorization was granted.

He was also asked if he was informed in advance about the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. “I don't discuss such details publicly,” Rutte replied, but stated that he had “numerous conversations” with American officials and that Washington and NATO are “closely coordinating” the actions.

Asked if NATO forces would be involved, Mark Rutte replied: “No, this is clearly an American and Israeli-led campaign.”

He added that from what we are “seeing now”, NATO allies and “friends in the region” are being subjected to “indiscriminate attacks” from Iran and that, under these conditions, they are doing the best they can in the current situation.
