Iranian media reveals when Ali Khamenei was actually killed

Although the death of the Iranian ayatollah was announced on Saturday night by Israel and the US, and only on Sunday night by the media in Iran, he was killed on Saturday morning.

Iran's Fars news agency has provided the first details about the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, writes Al Jazeera.

It says Khamenei was killed in his office while “carrying out his duties” in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to Iranian media, Ali Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law and grandson were also killed.

Fars news agency reported that the government declared 40 days of public mourning following the killing of Khamenei, writes Al Jazeera.

He also announced seven days of public holidays.

Aged 86, Khamenei had ruled Iran since 1989.
