US Vice President JD Vance said a possible attack against Iran would not trigger a long-term conflict in the region. “There is no chance” that such an action would lead to a prolonged war, he said in an interview for The Washington Post publication, quoted by Agerpres.
The statement comes at a tense time, where negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue and uncertainties about a possible US military intervention remain high.
The administration led by Donald Trump participated in the third round of talks with Iran on Thursday in Geneva, negotiations brokered by Oman.
At the end of the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the dialogue as “the most intense” negotiations so far with the American side.
What happens if negotiations fail?
If the talks fail, questions remain about possible US military intervention against Iran and when it might take place.
It also remains unclear what the impact would be on the region. Iran has already warned that it will retaliate in the event of an attack and may even strike Israel, which would significantly escalate tensions in the Middle East.
In this context, Vice President Vance's statement appears to be aimed at tempering fears of an escalating full-scale conflict as diplomacy continues to be put to the test.
