Laurentiu Reghecampf (50 years old), the coach of the Al Hilal Omdurmancriticized local Rwandan authorities for scheduling the championship match with Rayon Sport during Ramadan. During this period, Muslims fast daily from sunrise to sunset. They don't eat or drink.
The Romanian technician expressed his frustration in the press conference after the match. His team drew 1-1 at Rayon's ground in Nyanza on Wednesday.
The game started at 15:30, a time considered inappropriate in the context where most of the football players from Al Hilal Omdurman observe the holy month of Ramadan.
Laurentiu Reghecampf trashed the Rwandans in the conference: “How can you play if you haven't drunk, eaten or slept?”
During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, an aspect that Reghecampf states that it directly affects performance and, more importantly, player safety.
“I have nothing to say about the game. We have communicated to the Rwandan Federation and the Professional League that we are not prepared to play matches during the day because 99% of our team is made up of Muslims, but those in charge have not done anything.
How can you play if you haven't drank, eaten or slept? Next time we will not play in such a situation. We asked them to schedule our matches at night, but they did nothing.
I don't care about anything else but the lives of my players. Imagine if a player dies on the field who will be responsible? This is not humane”, said Reghecampf, according to newtime.co.rw.
The local press notes that Reghecampf made five changes at the start of the second half. Observers blamed the decision on player fatigue and the physical demands associated with the job.
Rwandan journalists also claim that “of the two arenas in the country capable of hosting matches at night, Amahoro Stadium and Kigali Pele Stadium, neither is currently available.
In many African and Middle Eastern leagues, matches involving Muslim-majority teams are often scheduled at night to allow players to break their fast before the kick-off whistle.”
Al-Hilal Omdurman cannot play in their home country, Sudan, due to the tense social situation.
