Wednesday's phone call between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky was very friendly and positive, three sources told Axios. And this time, the American president expressed his impatience for the end of the war.

A Ukrainian official and another source told Axios that Zelenskiy thanked Trump for all his help and said only Trump could convince Putin to stop the war.

“Zelensky then said he hoped the war would end this year, and Trump responded that the war has been going on for too long and would like it to end in a month,” one of the sources said. The White House did not respond to Axios' request for comment.

Negotiations in Geneva

Wednesday's phone call is the first between the two since they met in Davos at the end of January. It came a day before the US and Ukrainian delegations were to meet for a new round of peace talks.

Trump emissaries Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff attended the phone call. The two lead the American delegation participating in today's peace negotiations in Geneva with the Ukrainian delegation.

One of the sources Axios spoke to said there is a possibility that Russian emissary Kirill Dmitriev will also be in Geneva and have a separate discussion with the US delegation.

Talks for a threesome

One of the issues discussed by Zelenskiy and Trump was the possibility of holding a trilateral summit at the level of leaders.

Zelenski told Axios last week that remaining differences on the territorial issue can be overcome through direct talks between him, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump told Zelenskiy that he would push for such a trilateral summit if the next meeting between US, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators, planned for early March, makes progress.

“We expect this meeting to create an opportunity to move the talks to the level of leaders. President Trump supports this series of steps. It is the only way to solve all complex and sensitive issues and end the war,” Zelenskiy wrote on X.

A Ukrainian official said Trump reiterated his willingness to provide Ukraine with significant security guarantees from the US as part of a potential peace deal with Russia.
