The head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, announced this decision on Monday, after the meeting of EU foreign ministers. The politician emphasized that “the EU does not intend to tolerate the abuse of diplomatic powers by the Russian side.”

On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it had received Brussels' decision.

As Kallas admitted, the decision to limit the staff of the Permanent Representation of the Russian Federation to the EU is, apart from sanctions, one of the forms of pressure on Russia. The head of EU diplomacy announced that, together with the European Commission, she is also working on a ban on the entry of former Russian soldiers to the Schengen area.

“We don't want war criminals and saboteurs roaming our streets,” Kallas said. (PAP)
