The departure of Summers, a former university president, was announced by a university spokesman, quoted by the student newspaper Harvard Crimson, who said the decision was related to “an ongoing review of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein.”

The information was also confirmed by Summers himself, who said in a statement that he had made the “difficult decision” to retire.

Summers was placed on leave last November, when his correspondence with Epstein first came to light.

The economist, who was finance minister in Bill Clinton's administration and head of the National Economic Council in Barack Obama's White House, talked to Epstein, among others. about his attempts to seduce a student for whom he was supposed to be a “mentor” at Harvard. Epstein gave him advice on this matter.

Previously, Summers also left OpenAI's board of directors for the same reason. (PAP)
