The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) urged citizens in the areas affected by weather warnings “to avoid any travel that is not absolutely necessary”, in recommendations sent on Friday evening.

The institution warned that “blizzards dramatically reduce visibility” and low temperatures increase the risk of hypothermia, frostbite, road accidents and traffic jams.

The MAI has made the following recommendations for situations where travel is urgent and cannot be avoided:

  • Constantly inform yourself about the state of the roads;
  • Equip the vehicle appropriately for winter conditions;
  • Ensure a high level of fuel;
  • Have in the car: shovel, squeegee, blanket, water, food, flashlight;
  • Use only main roads;
  • Notify neighbors of your route and estimated time of arrival.

The MAI reminded that the elderly, children and people with medical conditions are the most vulnerable.

“The structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are at fault, and from the level of the MAI management, it was ordered to analyze the preventive closure of some road sectors where there is a major risk of blockage”, the statement also states.

The MAI urged local authorities “to pay special attention to vulnerable people, especially dialysis patients and pregnant women close to term, in order to order preventive measures, including early evacuation, if the situation requires it”.

“Prevention remains the most important measure,” the institution emphasized.

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued a new severe weather warning, with snow and blizzard, for Bucharest and 16 counties. The warning expires on Sunday morning, but the head of the institution, Elena Mateescu, did not rule out the possibility of updating the forecast and turning the alert into a code orange on Saturday.
