The family of a dead girl at Pediatrics, where she arrived with a common case of laryngitis, could receive record damages 12 years after the tragedy

More than a decade after the death of a 4-year-old girl in the Pediatrics section of the Hospital in Huși, the court could oblige the City Hall and the medical unit to pay moral damages of 160,000 euros. Although civil liabilities were established, no one was found criminally guilty.

The tragedy took place on the night of October 3 to 4, 2014, when Alexandra Bedregeanu, from the Bunești-Averești commune, aged 4, was brought to the Pediatrics section of the “Dimitrie Castroian” Huși Hospital with laryngitis, a condition that, according to the family, was not fatal.

The parents told how the child entered the medical unit on her own feet, held by the hand of her grandmother, but after about an hour she was declared dead. They accuse the pediatrician of wrongly performing an extremely risky medical maneuver, which should have been performed only by an emergency physician, which led to the child's death.

The Husi City Hall and the “Dimitrie Castroian” Hospital in Husi are now waiting for the court's final verdict in a process that has been going on for years. The Vaslui court is to rule on March 4, 2026 in the appeal filed in the civil file opened by the family, after moral damages were awarded in the total amount of 240,000 euros, according to vremeanoua.

In the first instance, Husi Hospital, Husi City Hall and pediatrician Floreta Bianu were jointly and severally obliged to pay compensation to the child's mother, father, grandmother and other relatives. Of the total amount, 160,000 euros would be borne by the City Hall and Huşi Hospital, i.e. from public budgets, money from local taxes and contributions to the health system.

Verdict awaited after several delays and no one guilty

The trial pending for many years in the Vaslui Court concerns a civil action, through which the family requested compensation for the moral damage suffered. The court postponed the ruling three times, setting March 4, 2026 as the final deadline.

Although a criminal investigation was opened after the death of the four-year-old girl, which lasted about four years, it ended without establishing any liability under the Criminal Code. That is, the authorities concluded that there were no criminal charges, despite the child's death.

Under these conditions, the family decided to open, on March 27, 2018, a civil action in court, again requesting the accountability of those considered responsible for the little girl's death, at least from a financial point of view, if no one responded criminally.

The process proved to be difficult and long-lasting, but in the end, the judges appreciated that the moral damage suffered by the family required the granting of financial compensation. However, Huşi City Hall and the Hospital and the doctor appealed, and the final verdict will be issued in March.
