Preparations for spring floods have begun at the Boguchanskaya HPP

For the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Boguchanskaya HPP during the flood period of 2026, it was created a commission led by First Deputy General Director – Chief Engineer Alexander Chainikov.

The commission’s primary task is an extraordinary inspection of equipment related to the passage of floods: gates and lifting mechanisms, structures of debris-holding grates, etc. According to long-term observations, the flood in the Lower Angara region begins in the first ten days of May and continues until mid-June; after its completion, a re-inspection of equipment and structures will be carried out.

“Safe passage of floods is a priority in the operation of every hydroelectric power station. We must enter this crucial period with fully operational equipment and trained personnel in order to ensure stable electricity production and the safety of the downstream areas,” noted Alexander Chainikov.

The commission included heads of the main technical departments, industrial safety and civil defense specialists. The personnel will have to carry out a large amount of preparatory work, including checking the equipment of the water intake, spillways No. 1 and No. 2, as well as buildings and structures falling into areas of possible flooding. Workers directly involved in the operation of hydraulic structures will be given unscheduled briefings on actions to take in the event of emergencies.

By the beginning of the flood, the commission will receive information about the readiness of structures to handle increased inflows. For the entire period of the spring flood, round-the-clock monitoring of the water level in the upper and lower reaches of the hydroelectric complex will be organized, as well as daily walks and inspections of structures.

According to data from mid-February 2026, snow reserves at the Angara Cascade are above normal. In the area of ​​the Ust-Ilimsk reservoir – 110-114%, in the basins of the Bratsk reservoir and Lake Baikal – 131-146%. In the area of ​​the Boguchanskaya HPP, snow reserves correspond to the long-term norm, in some places exceeding it by 30%. During the first ten days of February, the depth of the snow layer increased by 1-7 mm.
