In the Italian city of Matera, on the sets of Murgia Timone, filming is in full swing for the Resurrection of Christ, the new film by the Oscar-winning director, Mel Gibson, a sequel to the acclaimed and controversial Passion of Jesus, filmed in 2003 in the same city, according to La Repubblica.
The American director, who came to Matera to oversee the making of the outdoor scenes that will serve as the backdrop for the blockbuster whose release is scheduled for Easter 2027, was accompanied in the city by a special consultant, former Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, former apostolic nuncio to the United States, excommunicated in 2024 for schism due to his refusal to recognize the authority of Pope Francis and the legitimacy of the Second Vatican Council, as well as of his break with the Church.
Viganò, who has always held controversial positions and supported various conspiracy theories, which targeted both the ecclesiastical authorities and the 2020 pandemic, returned to live in Italy and was chosen by the American director as a religious consultant for the film Resurrection of Christ. The set of the film, produced in Italy by Tea Time Film srl, is currently located in the protected area of the Murgia Materana Park and at the request of the local authorities, no invasive sets were included to avoid the risk of impact on the environment and landscape.
Once this phase of filming is complete, the sets will move to nearby Gravina in Puglia (Bari) and Ginosa (Taranto), before moving to Salento, to Torre Guaceto and Brindisi, after which they will return to Matera, which will serve as the main set for exterior filming.(Material produced with the support of Rador radio Romania)
