The foreign policy of Poland, given over the internal political struggle. “From the hero to zero”

The presence of Poland at the top table of European foreign policy has lasted about a year and a half, but is now derailed by the open political war that exists between the president of the country and the prime minister, reports Politico.
“From the hero to zero,” writes the publication in the opening of an analysis about the “failure of the foreign policy of Poland”, which was absent from the Crisis meeting at the White House, where the high -ranking European leaders had gathered to support the Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski at the meeting with Donald Trump.
An effort made anteriorly to relaunch the Weimar triangle, consisting of Poland, Germany and France, fades as Paris and Berlin strengthen their relationships, and the status of Warsaw, as one of the most important allies of Kiev, is undermined by the political struggles regarding the Ukrainian refugees.
Exchange of replies on the topic in the US
The internal divisions will be fully exposed on Wednesday, when the right -wing president of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, will be at the White House for a meeting with Donald Trump, the US leader and his political ally, who has been open during this year's Polish presidential elections.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk sent to President Nawrocki that, in accordance with the Poland Constitution, the government led by the prime minister is the one who establishes the country's foreign policy.
“It will probably take some time until the president's office will adapt, fully understand the rules of the game and the consequences of the constitutional provisions.
The visit turns into a power game between the two Polish politicians, whose mutual antipathy is visible.
Nawrocki's office reacted with contempt to the instructions received from the Polish Foreign Ministry on the US visiting objectives.
Rafał Leśkiewicz, Nawrocki's spokesman, called them a “joke” printed on a single sheet of paper.
In reply, the ministry told him that it is “in fact the position of the Polish government, which is by its concise nature.”
Fight for power on the Polish political scene
The fight is part of a political war. Tusk runs a centrist coalition that took over power in December 2023, after removing the PIS government, in power for eight years. Nawrocki was supported by PIS, and his victory from June presidents and plus Trump's return to the White House derailed Tusk's hopes to bring Poland fully back to the EU's main current.
President Karol Nawrocki uses the mandate received by popular vote in trying to create a broader role, both internally and abroad.
In his first weeks of mandate, Nawrocki rejected a series of laws supported by the government.
During a stormy meeting that took place last week between the president and the prime minister's office, Nawrocki tried to get involved in the details of an airport building in central Poland, quarreled with the Minister of Finance and asked the Government to update his program to include promises made by him in the campaign.
Washington's trip will be the first visit abroad for Karol Nawrocki – a sign of the importance of the US for Poland and also of the political ties of the current presidents of the two nations.
However, despite the divisions that exist, Tusk and Nawrocki will have a 1 to 1 meeting before the trip to Washington will take, as the US alliance is considered to be crucial for Poland's security by all parties involved in the political dispute.
The internal political struggle also affects the relations between Warsaw and Kiev, given that the government “competes” with Nawrocki to show who is tougher with immigrants – including Ukrainians who fled to Poland in the context of the war unleashed by Russia.
