US President Donald Trump thanked the three US Supreme Court justices who voted in favor of his tariffs for “their strength and their wisdom and their love for our country”, but criticized the six of the majority who overturned them on Friday in his first remarks since the court's decision.

“The Supreme Court's decision on tariffs is deeply disappointing, and I am ashamed of certain members of the court for not having the courage to do what is right for our country,” said the Republican leader of the United States.

He claims that countries that have been “robbing” the United States “for years” are “ecstatic” after the Court's decision.

“But not for long, I can assure you of that,” the US president added.

“Democrats on the Court are excited. They will automatically vote 'no'. They are an automatic 'no', just like in Congress. They are against everything that makes America strong and healthy and great again. They are also, frankly, a disgrace to our country those judges,” the Republican continued.

News being updated

The US Supreme Court on Friday struck down tariffs imposed by Trump under a national emergency law, ruling that the president overstepped the bounds of his authority.

Tariffs generally need congressional approval, but the Trump administration argued that a 1977 law, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), would give the president the power to impose tariffs.

The law invoked by the Act gives the president, under certain circumstances, the authority to regulate or prohibit international transactions during a national emergency.

The Supreme Court ruled, in a 6-3 majority decision, that the way the Trump administration interpreted it violates Congress' powers and a legal principle known as the “major questions doctrine”.

The doctrine requires that actions by the executive branch of government of “vast economic and political significance” be clearly authorized by Congress. The same doctrine had been used by the Supreme Court to stop some of former President Democrat Joe Biden's major executive actions.
