Disability pension. How much is it and what conditions must be met?


A work incapacity pension is granted to people who cannot perform gainful work due to their health condition. There are total and partial incapacity for work, as well as special incapacity training pension for people requiring retraining. It is worth knowing the conditions that must be met to receive this benefit.

To receive a pension, you must be recognized as completely or partially incapable of work and have appropriate contributory and non-contributory experience, depending on the age at which the incapacity occurred.
Disability pension. What conditions must be met?
Incapacity for work must occur within the time specified by law, e.g. while employed or receiving benefits. Exceptions apply to people with long insurance history or who are completely unable to work.
The amount of the benefit depends on the degree of incapacity for work, insurance period and the amount of earnings. If ZUS cannot determine the assessment basis, it awards the lowest pension

As Infor.pl reminds, since 2005, incapacity for work has been declared for a maximum of 5 years, unless the prognosis is worse – then for longer. People close to retirement age may have a pension granted until they reach that age. After reaching the age of 60 (women) or 65 years (men), the pension is automatically converted into a retirement pension, the amount of which cannot be lower than the current pension.
How much is the pension for total incapacity for work?
Disability pension may be permanent or periodic, depending on the duration of the incapacity for work. As explained on the website of the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy, the amount of the partial incapacity pension is 75%. pension for total incapacity. If you receive a sickness benefit – as the pension for total incapacity for work is commonly called – you can work, but there are limits on how much you can earn extra money. From March 2026, income above PLN 6,438.50 will reduce the benefit, and income above PLN 11,957.20 will suspend it. These limits are updated quarterly.
Like all benefits, also the pension for total incapacity for work is subject to indexation. From On March 1, 2026, the lowest disability pension will increase to PLN 1,978.49 gross. If the Social Insurance Institution determines that the incapacity for work is partial, the benefit will be slightly lower. After the March indexation it will be at least PLN 1,483.87.
