Arsenal drew 2-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 31st round of the Premier League, and Mikel Arteta's side missed the chance to move seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.
The leader did not take advantage of the rescheduling of the game, caused by the qualification in the final of the League Cup, and wasted the chance to put serious pressure on the followers.
Perfect start for the leader
The Gunners opened the scoring quickly, in the 5th minute. Declan Rice made an excellent cross from the flank, and Bukayo Saka, in his first game after his contract extension, headed into the net.
The English international was the man of the first half: in addition to the goal, he managed five dribbles, recovered possession six times and had six touches in the opposition box. Arsenal controlled the game before the break, but without changing the scoreboard.
Spectacular second half
In the 53rd minute, Wolves gave the first sign of a comeback. Adam Armstrong, recently arrived from the Championship from Southampton, shot powerfully from around 25 yards, but the ball went over the crossbar.
The leader's reply came immediately. In the 56th minute, after a defensive move, Gabriel Magalhaes provided an excellent pass to Piero Hincapie, who beat Jose Sa to double the visitors' lead.
The hosts did not give in and reduced the gap in the 61st minute. Santiago Bueno stepped up inspired and passed down the flank for Hugo Bueno, who fired an unstoppable left-footed shot from outside the box, with no chance for David Raya.
The ending was dramatic. In the 90+4th minute, after a Raya blunder, Tom Edozie scored and Wolves came back from 0-2 down to snatch a desperate point from Molineux.
Leader, but with emotions. Wolves, also in last place
Arsenal have just one defeat in their last 12 matches (7 wins, 4 draws) and remain top of the table with 58 points, five above Manchester City. In the round, the Londoners won 2-1, after a final decided in overtime.
For Arteta's team, the trip to Tottenham Hotspur's field follows, the formation for which Radu Drăgușin plays.
On the other hand, Wolverhampton is going through an extremely difficult season. The “Wolves” remain in last place, with 10 points, 18 lengths from the first salvatory position, with 12 stages left to play. The team risks approaching the negative record set by Derby County (11 points in the 2007-08 season).
In the next round, Wolves will play Crystal Palace away in an attempt to keep a chance in the fight for survival.
