Băsescu: “The subject of the 2024 elections is no longer topical in the USA, but Romanians must know why their vote was canceled”

Traian Băsescu spoke on Tuesday evening, on the B1 TV station, about the visit of President Nicușor Dan to the United States, where the head of state is to participate in the Peace Council organized by Donald Trump. The former president assessed the possibility that the trip would clarify the position of the American administration regarding the cancellation of the 2024 Romanian elections.

Asked, in the News Pass show, if Nicușor Dan could dispel Washington's possible doubts regarding the cancellation of the election, Traian Băsescu, the former head of state, emphasized that the topic no longer seems to be on the agenda of the American administration.

“I don't think that now will be the opportunity for this to happen, on the one hand. On the other hand, I don't think that in the United States the topic of the Romanian elections in 2024 is a current topic. If it were still relevant now, we would have heard it in Munich, the topic raised in the speech of the Secretary of State“, said the former president.

Băsescu explained that, while in Europe there was support for the cancellation of the first round, in the relationship with the United States the subject seems to be fading:

“So I think that, little by little, this problem is fading in the relationship with the United States, and in Europe there was a lot of support to support the need to cancel the first round of the elections. So little by little this problem disappears from the external conditions, instead, it remains a big internal problem, which will have to be solved one way or another. A report… the Romanians who voted must know why their vote was cancelled.”

The theme of canceling the elections, less and less present in the external world

According to Băsescu, the absence of the subject from the speeches of American officials indicates that the tensions generated by the cancellation of the 2024 elections are no longer a diplomatic priority for Washington. Instead, the former president believes that the problem remains an internal one, which requires clear explanations for the electorate.

Nicușor Dan's visit to the USA, Băsescu says, does not seem to have the potential to change this perception, since the topic is no longer among the major concerns of the American partners.
