Experienced Ukrainian military will teach German colleagues in the Bundeswehr – Der Spiegel

According to media reports, the German Ministry of Defense plans to involve the Ukrainian military in training the German army as soon as possible in order to increase the combat capability of its own forces.

Der Spiegel also reports that last Friday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius signed a corresponding agreement during a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

The publication quotes a statement from the army speaker, who noted that the plan provides for “the inclusion of the experience of the Ukrainian military in the training of ground forces in army educational institutions.”

According to a source in the Bundeswehr (armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany), negotiations on this matter have been ongoing since 2025. As one officer noted, now “no NATO country has more combat experience than Ukraine,” and Germany should take advantage of this.

Details of the organization of training in the armed forces have not yet been disclosed for security reasons. However, if the agreements are implemented, the Ukrainian military will arrive in Germany in the near future and will work primarily with infantry units, Der Spiegel reports. Due to recruiting problems in Ukraine, instructors will likely only be in Germany for a few weeks.

Special attention, according to the publication, will be paid to Ukraine’s experience in the field of using and countering drones, which was developed over four years of war.

Also, as noted in the article, the German military can adopt the Ukrainian experience in using modern control systems. We are talking about relatively simple solutions for battle planning and coordination of units working in the format of mobile applications. Through such systems, both the supply of ammunition and the evacuation of the wounded are organized, Der Spiegel reports.
