Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump as caricature heroes at a parade in Germany

There were processions in the streets of Dusseldorf and Cologne, in which crowds of participants dressed in colorful costumes marched next to sculptures made of plaster and paper. Most of them were created by Jacques Tilly, a famous German sculptor and caricaturist. Tilly, wanted in Russia for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian army, is to be tried in absentia in Moscow on February 26.

Among the caricatures presented in Dusseldorf, the images of Vladimir Putin stood out the most. One of the sculptures showed the Russian president, his face swollen and red, wearing a uniform and thrusting a sword into a jester wearing a hat with the word “satire” written on it. Another work depicts Putin as the pilot of a drone marked with the colors of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a party accused of pro-Russian sympathies.

Tilly's work has accompanied the German Rosenmontag celebrations for years. In previous years, the artist showed, among others: Putin bathing in a bloody bathtub in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and this year behind bars at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Donald Trump also became the hero of this year's caricatures, boxing with Jesus with the slogan “love and humanity” on his T-shirt. In turn, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was depicted sitting on a dinosaur skeleton symbolizing the problems of the German automotive industry. Merz has found himself at the center of jokes over attempts to lift the ban on the sale of combustion cars after 2035 and replace them with electric vehicles.

There were also banners during the parades. One of them showed Putin in a striped prison uniform, with a black ball and a slogan calling for the Russian leader to be put in prison. Another one, in the colors of Ukraine, called for justice.
