A representative of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave a lecture at the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris. In the speech, he referred to the history of Hungary in the context of the current international situation, noting that after the end of World War I Hungary could either fight and commit collective suicide, or agree to peace, even if it meant huge territorial losses – Telex reported on Saturday.

The Hungarian deputy minister appeals to Ukraine. “The room can be painful”
– Was it painful? Of course it was painful. Now Ukraine would have to give one fifth of its territory. I don't want to tell Kiev what to do, I just say that our experience shows that the room can be painful. The question is, what is more important: maintaining the country's existence, or maintaining several thousand square kilometers? – said the diplomat.
Magyar referred to the painful memory of the Hungarian Treaty in Trianon, under which Hungary after losing World War I lost a significant part of their kingdom in favor of neighboring countries.
The deputy head of Hungarian diplomacy also commented on the deterioration of Hungary's relations with Ukraine, stating that the basis of the dispute is the Ukrainian Language Act in force for over 10 years, which limits the right to use minority languages, including Hungarians from the corner.
In 2023, the parliament in Kiev adopted a new law on national minorities, which took into account the requirements of the Council of Europe. However, the then deputy minister of foreign affairs of Hungary Tamas Menczer then recognized that the introduced changes were not sufficient.
Deputy Minister Magyar also assessed in Paris that the war, which broke out between Russia and Ukraine in 2014, was the result of Kiev's decision to “break with its tradition, his historical heritage, i.e. approaching the east, not the West,” said Telex. The portal added that the politician called the Ukrainian revolution of 2014 “the nationalist coup on the western orientation.”
The Hungarian government opposes Ukraine's accession to the EU. A spokesman for the Hungarian government Zoltan Kovacs announced in June that 95 percent voting in the referendum “VOKS 2025” objected to the accelerated path of Ukraine's accession to the community. The vote was accompanied by an anti -Ukrainian campaign, run by Hungarian authorities. Hungary has also been blocking the start of Ukraine's negotiations with the EU since February.
