North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday, February 15, attended the inauguration of a residential neighborhood in Pyongyang, intended especially for the families of soldiers who lost their lives in foreign operations, including the conflict in Ukraine.
In his speech, Kim Jong Un highlighted that the new neighborhood represents the “spirit and sacrifice” of fallen soldiers, adding that the homes were built so that bereaved families could “be proud of their sons and husbands and live happily,” according to channelnewsasia.
The North Korean leader also pointed out that he had insisted that the project be completed “even a day early” in the hope that it would bring “a little consolation” to those back home.
Official photos released by KCNA show Kim Jong Un with his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, visiting newly built homes and offering support to family members of fallen soldiers. Her increasing presence at such official ceremonies and events, including missile tests and military parades, is interpreted by analysts as a way for the regime to increase its visibility ahead of possible succession.
The inauguration of the neighborhood comes shortly before the ninth congress of the Workers' Party of North Korea, scheduled for the end of February, considered a key moment to strengthen the image of Kim Jong Un and showcase the achievements of the regime.
We remind you that in 2024, Pyongyang sent about 14,000 soldiers to support Russian forces, as part of a mutual defense pact, and South Korean, Ukrainian and Western sources estimate that more than 6,000 of them lost their lives.
In recent months, the North Korean regime has held numerous ceremonies and memorial projects to honor the sacrifice of the military, including the unveiling of a memorial complex in Pyongyang decorated with sculptures representing the troops and symbols of heroism. The events have a dual role: they show gratitude to the military, but above all, they serve domestic propaganda to strengthen support for Kim Jong Un and his leadership.
