The emissary of the White House, Steve Witkoff, and the son-in-law of the American president, Jared Kushner, will go to Geneva this week to hold talks with Iranian negotiators on the topic of Tehran's nuclear program, the information being confirmed on Sunday, February 15, by the White House, notes Agerpres.
An American official, who spoke under the protection of anonymity, confirmed that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, considered the main negotiators of President Donald Trump in the Iranian file, will represent the American side in these negotiations.
The Iranian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to an announcement made earlier by his ministry. During the trip, he will also have meetings with the foreign ministers of Switzerland and Oman, as well as with the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
According to Iranian authorities, the talks will be “indirect” and will take place on Tuesday, February 16, under the mediation of the Sultanate of Oman. The indirect formula usually involves the transmission of messages through intermediaries, without face-to-face negotiations between the main delegations.
The resumption of dialogue comes after Tehran and the United States reopened channels of discussion in Muscat, Oman's capital, on February 6, months after the previous round of talks failed. It had been suspended in June amid the 12-day war between Iran and Israel, a conflict triggered by Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear and military sites. Later, the United States also bombed some Iranian nuclear facilities.
The new round of diplomatic contacts takes place in a tense climate, where Washington has threatened Tehran with possible military intervention after the bloody crackdown on a protest movement in Iran.
After the meetings dedicated to the Iranian file, Witkoff and Kushner would remain in Geneva to participate in the discussions on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, negotiations carried out under American mediation.
