He was just 19 when, shortly after the Vancouver competition, a night out turned into a nightmare. The athlete revealed that she was sexually assaulted that night, an experience that profoundly changed her personal and professional path.
“I remember I was with a teammate. I bought a drink and after just a few sips a guy came up to me and started talking to me. I didn't think much of it and accepted the conversation.
Then he offered me a drink. I told him that I had already had one, but he came back with another and said: “Try this.'' I took a few sips, I was too naive. I didn't even finish the whole drink, but I felt weird. It was around 10pm.
“I tried to run away from him!”
(…) I tried to run away from him, but I just couldn't, no matter how hard I tried. He ended up putting me in a taxi. I remember, in a fog, asking the taxi driver not to take us to this guy's house and to take me to my address.
However, the predator convinced the taxi driver that I was his girlfriend and that I was just drunk, and he took us to his house. It was then clear to me that he was going to sexually abuse me and I continued to scream 'no'.
But no matter how much I did, he kept coming to me. My body couldn't fight this guy, my arms were dangling, I couldn't get up. Finally, I gave in and surrendered. I didn't know what to do. I definitely didn't want to tell my mom because I knew it would upset her!“Christie conveyed in his autobiographical book.
The worst was yet to come!
After the drama experienced, Elise Christie moved on and continued to fight on the ice, managing to get on the podium at important competitions. However, at the next editions of the Winter Olympics, in 2014, at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and in 2018, at the 2018 Winter Olympics, he again failed to confirm the expectations.
Plagued by repeated injuries and physically and emotionally exhausted, the athlete decided to retire ahead of the 2022 edition, scheduled for the 2022 Winter Olympics, ending an intense and challenging career.
“I had three jobs. I would literally finish at three in the morning at one job, sleep in the car for an hour and then go to another. I barely slept, I didn't eat. If I look at pictures of me from that time, I looked like I was fed up with life, I was completely done!“said Elise Christie.
To make ends meet after retirement, Elise Christie chose an unexpected path: she created an account on an online platform with subscription-based access, where she publishes material available only to those who pay a monthly fee.
