Revolution in the Japanese company Sanrio. The designer of Hello Kitty is leaving

The extravagant designer Yuko Yamaguchi has been responsible for the design of the Hello Kitty character and overseeing its development since 1980. Now, as Sanrio said in a statement, it has “passed the baton to the next generation.” The company revealed that the new designer, using the pseudonym Aya, is expected to start working at the end of 2026. Sanrio thanked Yamaguchi for her work and stated that she “listened to the voices of fans and actively collaborated with artists and designers from Japan and abroad, thanks to which Hello Kitty has become a character loved by everyone.”

The Japanese designer says goodbye to Hello Kitty
Yuko Yamaguchi will continue to provide advice and support on matters relating to the character she created. Previously, the designer was known for identifying herself visually with Hello Kitty – for example, she appeared in public in “cat-style” dresses and braided her hair in characteristic buns.
As “Japan Times” reminds, the Hello Kitty character was born as an illustration on a vinyl purse. Since then, it has appeared as a logo on tens of thousands of products – from handbags, through clothes and accessories, to rice cookers. Kitty's fascination continues unabated. Warner Bros. plans to make a movie about her, and next year a new amusement park called Hello Kitty is scheduled to open on the tropical Chinese island of Hainan.
