Competitiveness and climate? Here is Emmanuel Macron's response
“It would be a strategic mistake to say that we should abandon the climate to remain competitive.” – said the president of France.
Macron pointed out that some sectors change too slowly, and in this context he mentioned China as an example of a country that dynamically invests in clean technologies, both private and public.
“A burden on economies.” The President of France about the ETS system
The French leader admitted that the ETS system is currently working inefficiently in some countriesespecially those dependent on fossil fuels. He also pointed to speculation on the auction marketwhich causes the emission price to increase from the target of EUR 30-40 per tonne of CO2 to as much as over EUR 80.
“This puts a heavy burden on some economies. The European Commission will present specific solutions in March that will reduce this burden.” – added Emmanuel Macron, also announcing several technical solutions.
It is worth recalling that reform of the ECJ is also Poland's demand. Warsaw calls for maintaining the number of emission permits at a constant levelwithout further reduction, and the exclusion of certain energy-intensive sectors, such as cement or steel, from the obligation to redeem permits.
