The Ministry of National Defense (MApN) sent a press release on Wednesday stating that there is a possibility that drone debris could be washed ashore by waves, as a result of a multinational exercise that took place recently in the Capu Midia training ground. The clarifications come in the context of the fragments found Monday evening on the beach in the Mamaia resort, regarding which the authorities are investigating.
MApN specified that, during the week of February 2-6, as part of the multinational Dynamic Front exercise, combat firings took place in the Capu Midia training ground on single-use air targets from the surface of the water with MLRS systems equipped with the German, French, Italian and US armed forces.
“All the targets – drone type, without cargo – were shot down above the sea surface in the polygon sector. The French structures launched Mistral surface-to-air missiles at some SQ-20 single-use aerial targets, and the American soldiers present at the exercise launched Stinger and Avenger surface-to-air missiles at several Outlaw MQM170-G2 single-use aerial targets,” the statement said.
The institution explained that, under these conditions, “there is a possibility that the remains of such an aerial target, which was shot down during the firing, will be brought to the shore by the waves.”
Drone fragments on the beach in Mamaia
The statement comes in the context in which, on Monday evening, MApN was notified that on the beach in the Victoria Hotel area, Mamaia resort, the existence of some drone fragments was reported by calling 112.
“Specialized teams of institutions in the field of national security and defense intervened according to procedure and picked up the drone elements. In this case, MApN specialists were not asked to intervene, the procedure being a usual one, applied in other similar situations,” the institution stated.
According to MApN, the case is being investigated under the coordination of the prosecutor from the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Constanța Court of Appeal.
