Folk calendar

Fedor is a funeral celebrant.

The Monk Theodore the Studite, whose memory is celebrated on this day, was born in 758 in Constantinople and received a broad and varied education. In 796, for zeal for the preservation of church rules and denouncing the lawlessness of Emperor Constantine VI Porphyrogenitus, after severe torture, he was exiled to prison.

Later, during the reign of Empress Irina, the monk was returned from exile and received control of the desolate Studii monastery, in which his relics still rest. The monk wrote many soul-helping books.

The Monk Theodore performed many miracles both during his life and after his death. Those calling on his name were saved from fires, from attacks by wild animals, and received healing from ailments.

In Rus' it was believed that on this day the deceased yearn for their loved ones and walk the earth. In addition, on this day it was customary to pray to Theodore for healing from chest illnesses and stomach pains.

This day was also called “pea day”. They used peas to guess the weather: if dry peas rolled around the dish with a ringing sound, this foreshadowed bitter frosts, and if they rolled silently, quiet snowfalls. People born on this day cooked and ate pea porridge on Fyodor (Theodore) so that the peas would give them strength for the whole next year.

They also said about Fyodor Studit: “Fedor Studit chills the earth.” And it was also believed: as this day is, so will spring be.
