Folk calendar

Gregory's day, Gregory is a spring indicator.

On this day, Gregory the Theologian, one of the Church Fathers, a close friend and associate of Basil the Great, was honored. The legacy of Saint Gregory consists of 243 epistles, 507 spiritual poems and 45 sermons.

Since, according to the folk calendar, the day before (on Aksinya) the “half-winter season”, or mid-winter, was celebrated, the turn to spring was expected on Gregory. So they said: “Aksinya hurries Gregory, so as not to miss the spring, he puts the sun on the roofs.”

This day is one of the most interesting in terms of weather forecasts. It was believed that on St. Gregory’s day you can look not only a month or even a season ahead, but also much further.

They said that whatever the day was like before noon, the first half of the next winter would be like that. Accordingly, part of the day from lunch to evening predicted the weather for the second half. They also noticed that if snow falls on Gregory, then winter will not come soon next year. But we were not happy about the singing of tits on this day – this meant that there would still be frosts in February.

On St. Gregory's Day in Russian villages, people were supposed to do good deeds themselves and remember the good deeds done by others. They didn’t talk about their own good deeds: they had to do good not for show, but for the sake of their own soul. On this occasion they said: “The Lord already sees all good deeds.”
