The EU has largely replaced purchases of Russian gas with liquefied natural gas (LNG), which means a disturbing new dependence on the United States, said Commissioner Joergensen, quoted by AFP. “There is a growing concern, which I share, about the risk of replacing one dependency with another,” Joergensen said.

As he added, geopolitical changes resulting from the crisis in Greenland were already a wake-up call when it comes to relations with the USA.

The commissioner, who took part in a meeting of the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) committee on Wednesday, told MEPs that if Europe is to be strong, sustainable and independent, it must complete the Energy Union.

– We must have a network that is modern, efficient and effective. We need locally produced, clean, cheap energy that can flow freely throughout the continent (…) To make this a reality, we must act together – he said.

Data from the Council of the EU show that in 2024, the EU imported over 100 billion cubic meters. LNG. Its largest supplier to the EU was the United States, which provided almost 45%. total import of this fuel; US imports in 2024 were more than twice as large as in 2021.
