North Koreans cannot afford medicines and fuel
The poorest residents suffer the most because they cannot afford to heat their homes or buy medicines. In many cases, they are forced to endure the disease without any medical help.
— Wealthy people heat their homes with wood or coal and recover quickly by buying medicine or using drips. But poorer people can heat their homes only once or twice a day, says an anonymous source to Daily NK.

North Koreans also have a serious problem purchasing cold medicines. A single cold tablet costs approximately PLN 1,500-2,000. won (approx. PLN 0.80–1.12), while ciprofloxacin injection [antybiotyk do leczenia chorób bakteryjnych] this is an expense of around PLN 40,000. won (approx. PLN 22). The poorest cannot afford it.

Sick parents are looking for medicines for their children
The situation has a particularly dramatic impact on families with children. Parents, often sick themselves, do everything to get money for medicines for their children. “It's hard to hold back tears when you see parents running around looking for medicines for their children while they themselves endure the disease without treatment,” the source told Daily NK.
