A nutritionist explains why you really want sweets and how to get rid of them.

Constant cravings for sweets often become an obstacle to weight loss, but the reason lies not only in eating habits. As Russian nutritionist Olga Pavlova explained, the desire to eat sugar is often associated with internal deficiencies and hormonal imbalances.

According to the specialist, cravings for sweets can be provoked by a lack of vitamins D and C, as well as a deficiency of magnesium, chromium, zinc and iron. At the same time, taking vitamins without examination is not always effective – dosages and forms should be selected individually, preferably after tests and consultation with a doctor.

The structure of the diet also plays an important role. A nutritionist recommends including protein in every meal, as it keeps you full and slows down the absorption of carbohydrates. Preference should be given to complex carbohydrates and foods rich in fiber, especially vegetables. Skipping meals, according to the expert, increases blood sugar spikes and increases the risk of breakdowns.

In addition, cravings for sweets may be related to hormonal levels. Elevated insulin levels reduce sensitivity to leptin, the satiety hormone, and chronic stress with high cortisol increases the desire to get quick energy from sugar. With reduced thyroid function, metabolism slows down, which can also increase the need for simple carbohydrates.

As basic steps, Pavlova advises establishing a regular, balanced diet, normalizing sleep, reducing stress levels and undergoing a basic examination – including testing for ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid hormones, insulin and glucose.

The expert emphasizes that giving up sugar is not a system of strict prohibitions, but a comprehensive work with nutrition, deficiencies and lifestyle, which helps not only to lose weight, but also to improve overall well-being.
