Folk calendar
Timofey's day, Timofey – half-winter road
On this day, Timothy's name day is celebrated – in memory of Saint Timothy, a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of Ephesus.
Timofey received his popular nickname because the day of his remembrance is considered the middle of winter (“Timofey knocks off the horn of winter,” they said in Rus'). Despite the fact that half of the winter time was behind us, there was no point in relaxing. It is no coincidence that in honor of this saint in Rus' they came up with a special concept – Timothy's frosts; It was believed that the most severe blizzards and blizzards began on Timofey's Day.
There were sayings about frosts, for example: “The Timofeevsky frost took away the half-winter with it”; “Athanasius the frost is freezing his nose, but wait a minute – it’s raining for Timothy.” Several signs were associated with them: if the windows “fog up” in frost, this means warming; if patterns run across the glass, the cold will continue for a long time. They also looked at the sky: if the sun is visible, it means spring will be early. But the snowfall on Timofey promised a good grain harvest.
On this day, the beekeepers watched the bees—more precisely, they listened to the sounds from the omshanik. If the insects buzzed barely audibly, it meant everything was going well; if the buzzing was restless, something was wrong with the bee colony.
On this day, as on other “half-winter days,” the bins were checked. It is important that there is enough grain, vegetables and livestock feed until the new harvest. If the owners saw that supplies were scarce, they had to save. On this occasion they said: “By spring it’s harder for a peasant – the bread is getting smaller.”
But the girls-handicraftsmen had fun that day – they rode down the slides on the bottoms on which they spun flax and wool. At the same time, they looked: whoever rides further will have more flax on his farm.
