The way to achieve superpower status and independence from the USA was to be several common European defense projects. One of them is the concept of creating a sixth-generation fighter that cooperates with a swarm of drones. Work on the project worth EUR 100 billion has stalled because companies from Germany and France are unable to agree on who will take over the majority of shares in the project. The French want 80 percent. shares and Germany an equal share. The quarreling parties do not rule out that they will start developing their own fighters on their own. As Chancellor Merz admitted a few days ago, decisions should be made “in the next few weeks” – we read in “DGP”.
According to “DGP” – there are also sparks between Rome and London. In 2021, the capitals partnered with Japan to develop its own sixth-generation stealth fighter. At the beginning of the year, the Italian Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, accused the London partners of not being willing to share their technologies. Financial dissatisfaction is also growing. The estimated own contribution of Italians increased from EUR 6 billion planned in 2021 to EUR 18.6 billion.
Europe also has problems on land. Already in 2014, the Germans and the French started working on a future tank that would replace the German Leopard 2 and the French Leclerc, but the work stalled. Berlin has already announced the development of its own machine, which is to be a transitional solution from the Leopard 2 to the tank of the future.
In the opinion of Jerzy Marek Nowakowski, head of the Euro-Atlantic Association, there is still a chance for our continent.

The Americans are a difficult ally, but they are not an enemy, so Europe needs countries such as Poland or Italy that have good relations with the United States and at the same time, as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni nicely demonstrates, can be assertive towards an ally at the right moment – says a diplomat to “DGP”.
