A special unit of the Estonian police and border guard, supported by navy ships, boarded a container ship heading towards St. Petersburg. The ship, flying the flag of the Bahamas, is suspected of involvement in smuggling from South America. – informed the customs and tax services.

Estonian services detained the Baltic Spirit ship sailing from Ecuador early Tuesday evening near the island of Naissaar, several kilometers north of Tallinn. A special police unit disembarked from the helicopter. The ship entered Estonian waters to replenish fuel supplies.

According to information available to the Estonian Navy, the ship is not part of Russia's “shadow fleet” nor is it subject to European Union sanctions. “The crew did not put up any resistance during the operation,” the authorities emphasized in the statement.

Authorities are currently carrying out inspections on board the aircraft 188-meter long container ship. Investigative activities are also underway to check whether the ship is transporting, for example, drugs, ERR radio reported.

This is not a small ship. It has a large number of containers, and all of them require inspection, said Marek Aas, commander of the K-Commando police special unit.

He revealed that Baltic Spirit has 23 seats. crew, and all its members are Russian citizens.
